Acupuncture treatments involve the insertion of very thin needles through the skin at strategic points on the body. All acupuncture treatments use sterile, disposable needles to ensure the safest acupuncture treatment possible, however, although acupuncture is a safe treatment; it may cause some side effects including bruising, numbness, tingling, light-headedness, dizziness, fainting, minor swelling and/or bleeding. A haematoma may occur at the insertion site(s) and may last a few days. In very rare cases acupuncture has been reportedly associated with bodily infections or the collapse of the lung. Allergic skin reactions to massage oils, acupuncture needles or topical applications can also occur.
Moxibustion treatment involves the burning of a stick or cone of dried plant materials called “moxa” close to the surface of the skin. hot ash from the moxa, if dropped onto skin, may cause the skin to blister.
Cupping utilises round cups over a large muscular area (such as the back) to create suction and is used to enhance blood circulation in the area being treated. Cupping may have some side effects in the area where the cups touch the skin such as mild discomfort, burns, bruises and in rare cases, may cause skin infection.

3. TREATMENT PROTOCOLS
(a) How the treatment works
TCM treatments work on your energy levels and assist in:
- drawing out toxins;
- shifting blockages from your energy channel meridians and internal organs; and
- improving your blood flow to help your body heal naturally.
(b) Expectations Post-Treatment
The treatment works by building up your energy and detoxifying your body at the same time. After the treatment, your body’s energy and toxins are effectively moving around. Some older blockages start to shake and shift at the same time both using energy and adding energy.
Different patients with different health conditions may respond differently.
In general, after your first treatment, you will feel tired and relaxed with a desire to sleep during the day or a wish to go to bed early.
For patients experiencing only minor health problems, because you will have less toxins and a good energy level, you could experience improved pain relief together with better energy levels, digestion and sleep patterns, and could also feel more relaxed after the treatment.
For patients with chronic health problems, because you have more toxins to remove, it will take longer to build up your energy levels, so you may feel tired for up to two days post treatment. In some cases, you could also have a return of some of the chronic symptoms.
(c) Skin marks
Cupping will leave some marks on your skin. These marks and their colour indicate the level of your toxins. If you have fewer toxins, the marks remaining after treatment will be light in colour, whereas if you have high levels of toxins, the marks will be darker in colour. In other words, the healthier you are, the lighter the colour of your marks or you may have no marks at all. The marks will disappear a few days or a week after treatment. The time it takes for the marks to disappear depends on your blood circulation.
Acupuncture may result in some bleeding or swelling at the site(s) of needle insertion, which may last a few days after the treatment is provided. Some people may have allergic skin reactions to massage oils and/or acupuncture needles. If you experience such a reaction, you should inform your practitioner, who may apply a topical application to relieve the reaction.
(d) Preparation for Treatment
Patients must abstain from:
- having any form of sexual intercourse on the day of treatment;
- showering on the day of treatment; and
- drinking alcohol on the day of treatment.
- Post Treatment
Patients are advised to:
- eat light meals;
- not go swimming after cupping therapy;
- get plenty of rest and save energy for the healing process; and
- stay calm, relaxed and emotionally stable.
(e) Treatment Precautions
If you are prescribed Chinese herbal teas and after drinking them, you exhibit the following symptoms, you must immediately stop taking them and contact your TCM practitioner or doctor straight away:
- abdominal pain and/or diarrhea;
- increased heart rate or palpitations
- severe headache; and/or
- other abnormal feelings (including dizziness or fainting).
